G20 India - The Wall of the People
Project type
Art Direction
Client
Makaibari
For the G20 Tourism Working Group visit to Makaibari Tea Estate, Oiendrila led the art direction and spatial experience - shaping a visit that brought together place, people, and process in a cohesive narrative.
At the centre of the experience was The Wall of the People, a large-scale mural on the factory facade, developed in collaboration with master artist Shubhasis Paul. The mural foregrounded the women tea pluckers of Makaibari, establishing a clear and immediate identity for the estate through its people.
The wider experience was designed across the estate itself - using movement, setting, and sequence to guide delegates through the landscape. This culminated in a moonlight plucking of Silver Tips Imperial tea, a rare and time-specific harvest that offered a direct engagement with the estate’s craft and rhythm.
This wasn’t an event layered onto a location. It was a complete spatial narrative - where art, environment, and experience were directed as one.
Oiendrila’s role was not just to design moments, but to orchestrate them. To control scale, emotion, and memory - so what the delegates took back wasn’t just Darjeeling tea, but a lasting impression of where it comes from, and who makes it possible.
